Lesoetsa Makafane
Managing Director
Lesoetsa Makafane provides overall leadership of
the company while also in charge of business development, ensuring that Avalanche’s current
clients are satisfied and securing new business. He was previously involved in the procurement
management for a client building a M26 billion infrastructure that involves construction of 165m
high dam and a 38km long tunnel intended to increase water supply from the highlands of Lesotho
to the province of Gauteng in South Africa. His role was centred on acquisition strategy and
solicitation. The project is concerned with procuring services of engineering design firms,
construction contractors and social and environmental expertise.
A procurement and supply chain management practitioner with many years of experience in the
field, he has previously managed multi-million dollar procurements working with the United States
Government’s Millennium Challenge Account – Lesotho, where he oversaw strategy and
procurement management for construction of water and health infrastructure and private sector
development, the implementation of which covered the whole of Lesotho.
Prior to doing procurement, Mr. Makafane worked in the office of the CEO of the Millennium
Challenge Account – Lesotho, monitoring progress in various departments ranging from water and
health infrastructure, procurement, monitoring and evaluation, to fiscal accountability,
consolidating this for the CEO and for external stakeholders. During this time, he was also adjunct
board secretary in managing the affairs of the board of directors.
Mr. Makafane has served on the faculty at the National University of Lesotho, teaching various
courses in a number of departments. He is a BA graduate of the same university. He read the Master
of Arts in Development Economics at Brandeis University (USA). He is a fellow of the Programme for African Leadership of the world renowned London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), where he also read the Master of Science
in Accounting, Organisations and Institutions. Mr. Makafane is a member of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply.
He holds a Second Dan Black Belt in Tae-Kwondo from Kukkiwon.
A Chevening Scholar, Makafane is an MSc Infrastructure Investment and Finance candidate at the University College London (UK).
